Pupil referral unit is improving
A pupil referral unit which was branded ‘inadequate’ by education watchdogs is showing signs of improvement.
However, Ofsted inspectors say more still needs to be done at the Albany Centre, in Bury St Edmunds, to raise standards.
Inspectors rated the Beard Road unit, which teaches pupils who have been or are at risk of exclusion from school, as ‘requiring improvement’.
A report said there has been progress under new head Jane Reason, who ‘is ably supported by the deputy head and provides strong and purposeful leadership in moving the unit forward in order to improve the quality of education’
Students are making good progress in some lessons and doing well in vocational courses while the unit provides good opportunities that enrich learning. The report added that the unit needs to improve the quality of teaching so that at least 80 per cent is good or better, improve attendance as well as leadership and management.
Mrs Reason said: “Our ambition is to be at least ‘good’ by this time next year and to provide an ‘outstanding’ provision within three years. We have come a long way since last year’s inspection and much of what we do is now good. There are still areas where we know we can do better and we intend to ensure we do so.”
