Public put a freeze on dialling 999 as the temperatures drop
Ambulance chiefs have thanked the public for heeding advice in the icy spell after 999 calls dropped.
Calls usually rise with bad weather but there have been fewer than a month ago.
Though East Of England Ambulance Service Trust drafted more staff, volunteers and vehicles, including 4x4s, into Suffolk and Norfolk to cope with the worst of the weather people seem to have been more sensible about making 999 calls.
In Suffolk the 282 calls on Tuesday January 15 were 39 down on Tuesday December 18 while Norfolk made 48 fewer calls at 378.
The downward trend was seen in all six counties covered by the trust.
Neil Storey, Director of Operations, said: ““The wintry weather is set to continue but by people considering other ways to get help when the situation isn’t a real emergency it means we can help patients whose lives may depend on it. Please carry on sticking to the advice.”
He also praised staff and volunteers. Some staff on leave also volunteered to return to work.
