A suspected drink-driver was on her way back from a failed attempt to report her ‘abusive’ husband to police, a court has heard.

Prosecuting, Wayne Ablett said on December 20 police received a call from a member of the public who had followed a car they had seen swerving ‘all over the road’ to the BP petrol station in Rougham Road.

The car was gone by the time police arrived at around 7pm but they found it pulled over in Rushbrooke Lane.

They arrested the driver, Yvonne Michelle Bloomfield, when she refused to give a specimen for analysis, said Mr Ablett.

On Tuesday, at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court, Bloomfield, 41, of Bradfield St George, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen.

She received a six month community order with supervision and a women’s emotional well-being activity requirement.

She was banned from driving for 36 months, to be reduced by nine months on completion of a driver’s rehabilitation course.

She was also ordered to pay £85 towards costs and a victim surcharge of £60.

In mitigation, Paul Booty said it had ‘kicked off’ when Bloomfield’s ‘violent and abusive’ husband got home.

He said: “There was a discussion around bathing the children for bed. He said he was going to do it but he came down in a rage, grabbed her by the hair and locked her out.”

Despite having shared a bottle of wine with a friend, Bloomfield decided to drive to the police station to report her husband. She got most of the way there before getting scared and turning round, added Mr Booty.
