Postcard plea is a winner for safety volunteers

Some 3,000 postcards dropped on to householders’ doormats in October asking them to think about after dark safety.
The Lights on Timers week saw Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators drop postcards through doors alerting people to safety measures to secure their homes.
The co-ordinators’ names were then entered into a prize draw for crime prevention equipment.
On Friday, Bob Jones, from Brandon, received his prize of alarms and timer switches for his scheme in Crown Street while Peter Newby, also from Brandon, and Pam Miller from Wickhambrook, received runner up prizes.
Chief Inspector Jenny Powell from Suffolk Police’s community safety department said: “Leaving your house in total darkness is a sure sign no-one’s at home and an invitation to burglars.
“Burglars look for quick win opportunities. They don’t want to run the risk of a confrontation so simply leaving a light on gives the impression someone is at home and is often enough to deter them.”
