Police seize car in new driver blitz
Police in Stowmarket seized a car on Sunday night as part of a crack down on the anti social use of vehicles.
Under section 59 of the Police Reform Act all officers have the power to issue warnings for careless driving on and off road, or to vehicles likely to cause harassment, alarm or annoyance to members of the public.
Section 59 warnings serve as a black mark against the driver and the vehicle they are found driving, with a second warning issued to either within a 12 month period resulting in a vehicle seizure. A removal charge of 150 will be incurred in addition to storage fees and if they are not paid the vehicle is sold or crushed. The man whose car was seized on Sunday has since paid to have his car released.
The clamp down comes after the decision was taken to gate Iliffe Way car park to prevent motorists' anti-social use of it at night and concerns about moving the problem from one area of town to another.
