Police find drug grower by smell
POLICE found a man was growing cannabis at home after smelling the drug coming from a car.
Anthony Gaughan, 27, of Russet Drive, Red Lodge, pleaded guilty to possessing and producing Class B drugs when he appeared at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
Prosecuting, Colette Griffiths said it was around 8.30pm on July 17 when police, on foot patrol in Mildenhall, noticed the smell of cannabis coming from an open Vauxhall Vectra.
Gaugham, who was sitting in the car at the time, handed police a small bag of cannabis.
A search of the vehicle revealed more of the drug in the glove box and in the dash under an armrest, said Mrs Griffiths.
Police also found keys to a van parked nearby and, in searching it, found a grinder and cannabis in the centre console.
Later the same day, police searched Gaughan’s home and discovered two mature cannabis plants, as well as drug paraphernalia including a hydroponic tent, a temperature gauge and lighting connected to the mains supply.
A small quantity of skunk was also found, said Mrs Griffiths.
In mitigation, Lyndon Davies said Gaughan had not been in trouble since 2004 and had not owned the equipment that police discovered at his home.
He said: “The two adult plants were originally planted by a friend and he borrowed the hydroponic equipment to grow the plants thereafter.”
For cultivating the plants, Gaughan received a £250 fine.
He received no separate penalty for the drug possession but was ordered to pay costs of £85 and a £15 victim surcharge.
Magistrates ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the drugs, the plants and any associated equipment.
Acting Sergeant Vicky McNamara said: “Cultivating cannabis at home is a very foolish thing to do and those found guilty can expect to be dealt with by police and brought before the courts.”
