Plot holders beat the weather

ALLOTMENT holders have done well in spite of the freaky weather.
That was the judges’ view for this year’s annual Bury St Edmunds Town Council Allotments Competition.
Stefan Oliver, the council’s allotments champion and president of the West Suffolk Horticultural Society, said: “In view of the conditions this year, we were very impressed by what we’ve seen. With the cold spring and perpetual wet weather since, some things are flourishing while others aren’t where we would expect them to be.
“We admire the allotment holders and their tenacity and patience.”
Cllr Oliver and fellow judges John Bell, a retired Marlows horticulturist, and the Bury Free Press’ John Henderson, who grows what the rabbits let him, on Wednesday found a very different picture to after last year’s warm dry spring.
In some places, fruit that was ripe last year was still green and few tomato plants were even in flower.
The wet weather has also given the weeds a boost and enabled them to run riot over the few neglected allotments. The stream at the bottom of the Sicklesmere Road allotments, which was dry last year, was flowing, having flooded some plots earlier in the year.
Winners will be announced at an awards presentation on St Edmund’s Day, November 20.
