Plea for improved rail links

BRANDON can tap into the burgeoning ‘Silicon Fen’ technology drive – but only if its rail links improve.

That is the view of MPs and councillors in the town, which has seen a surge in visitor numbers at the train station in the last few years.

Cllr Ian Horner, from Brandon Town Council, said train times needed to change to encourage commuters into the town.

“The Brandon to Cambridge train gets in at 8.59am – unless you work very close to the train station that is not very helpful.

“I think there’s a real possibility of the ‘Silicon Fen’ spreading up the line to Brandon. That’s a really exciting prospect and we need to plug into it,” he said.

MPs Elizabeth Truss, Matthew Hancock and George Freeman have also been pressing Justine Greening, Secretary of State for Transport, to approve a dualling project at Ely North Junction.

The work would alleviate the bottleneck and improve services to the Brandon area, according to the MPs.

Mr Hancock said: “Double- tracking the Ely North railway junction would bring a big boost to the town of Brandon, and the wider East Anglian economy, at an affordable cost.”
