Planning claims

CLAIMS that the majority of countryside around Bury St Edmunds is potentially under threat from development have been rebuffed by council bosses.

Bury St Edmunds MP David Ruffley was told in a meeting with national officers from the Campaign to Protect Rural England that 88 per cent of the countryside in Bury was under threat as a result of the Government’s proposed National Policy Planning Framework.

However, a spokeswoman for St Edmundsbury Borough Council said: “The borough is protected from random development by the up to date Core Strategy that we have put in place. This designates 94 per cent of the borough as countryside where the presumption is against development.”
