IF you went down to Debenhams on Wednesday your were sure of a big surprise.

Because that was the day the teddy bears had their picnic in the Bury St Edmunds store’s window.

The staff decided to launch their part in the chain’s nationwide campaign to support the BBC’s Children in Need appeal by putting on the picnic.

The store’s visual team, who usually put manikins dressed in the latest fashions in the windows, put themselves in instead and even had their lunch there. Those who were not in the Pudsey suit had taken this year’s Children in Need theme of spots to heart and wore spotty clothes, Pudsey ears and even had their faces painted with spots.

The rest of the staff joined in, too, with plenty of spotty people around the store, while someone boosted funds making cakes in the staff canteen.

Taking a break from the window, visual supervisor Susie Bridges said: “Thankfully it’s not been too hot today. It get’s very hot in there, that’s why we couldn’t all be in full suits.

“It’s quite funny because people don’t seem realise you’re real until you move, then you see them jump.”

But the effort was worth it because the store was halfway to its £1,000 target by about 4pm on Wednesday and Pudsey will still be there today from noon until 4pm and tomorrow from 10am to 4pm, though donations can be made at the tills at any time.

Store manager Gail Chandler said: “Bury customers have been really generous.”
