Stunning photographs taken at Lakenheath Fen have been judged and the winners of their competition announced.

Lovers of photography and wildlife spent 2012 snapping dramatic and beautiful scenes at the RSPB’s fen to submit to their Stepping Up For Nature photography competition.

Winners were selected at the end of each season and now, at the end of the year, the overall winners have been chosen.

In first place was Gerry Studd, of High Wycombe, with ‘Bittern’ his photograph of bittern in flight over the reserve.

Ron Smith, of Sudbury, was awarded second place for ‘Dawn Scene’ which shows a beautiful August sunrise over the fen.

Ron said: “Wow that’s great news, am so chuffed, as I really am a beginner as far as photography goes. I can’t wait to retire and spend more time with RSPB Lakenheath Fen. My best reserve by far.”

‘Dandelion’ a close up view of a dandelion taken by Ruth Nickerson, of Bury, Cambridgeshire, won third place.

David White, information officer, said: “It has been such a tough decision judging all of the wonderful photographs that were submitted for the competition. They really showcased the photographic potential of the reserve.”
