Phantom returns home to retire

A PHANTOM jet is returning to Wattisham and will become a permanent reminder of the fighters which flew from the airfield.
The Phantom XT914 was one of the last jets to be based at Wattisham before it was handed over by the RAF to the Army in 1993.
The aircraft was saved from the scrapyard to stand at the gate of RAF Leeming in North Yorkshire before going to RAF Brampton, in Cambridgeshire, which is due to close in 2013.
But now the Phantom is returning home for refurbishment before going on display at the Wattisham Heritage Museum.
Last Thursday, the jet’s logbook was presented to Colonel Neale Moss, Commander of Wattisham Flying Station, by Wing Commander Robert Cook, RAF Brampton Wyton Henlow’s station commander.
Wing Cdr Cook said: “I’m delighted that the Phantom will not be scrapped but will return to its original home at Wattisham, where it will be restored and displayed as part of their historical aircraft collection.”
Engineers will now break the aircraft down so it can be transported to Wattisham where work can be carried out.
