Paul plans 30-hour challenge
A councillor who swam the English Channel has handed over £10,000 to two charities.
Suffolk county councillor Paul Hopfensperger, who swam the Channel in July, handed over the money to St Nicholas' Hospice and Clic Sargent on Thursday – as he starts preparing for a mammoth 30- hour swim in September.
Paul, who lives in Bury St Edmunds, is bidding to become only the 19th person to swim the two ways – swim the Channel and then turn around and come back again – a task he thinks will take him 30 hours but which he hopes will help him to raise another 40,000 for the two charities.
"It is a totally different psychological thing to – in effect you have to swim across one way and then start your Channel swim.
"Without a doubt it is daunting."
First of all though, Paul will be swimming for the West Suffolk Swimming Club in the World Cold Water Swimming Championships, in London, next Saturday – a competition that will see 83 competitors swimming in temperatures of 3C.
You can sponsor Paul for the two way at www.hoffyswims.com or call 07887 711333.
He is also looking for corporate sponsorship to raise the 7,500 required to fund the Channel swims.
