Parking joy for town’s residents
Campaign to get extra parking for residents in Kings Road (It's in Zone H) had been successful Pictured: Cllrs Paul Farmer and Mark Ereira-Guyer with Residents
RESIDENTS in one area of Bury St Edmunds were ‘thrilled’ this week after the introduction of parking bays outside of their homes.
The bays were created in King’s Road East on Friday but cannot legally be used until Monday when the permit-holders will also be allowed to use any parking bay in Zone H, across Parkway.
Since moving into her house six years ago, resident Maire O’Brien said she had juggled parking her car between free spaces, car parks and her mother’s garage but, it was ‘never in the right place at the right time’.
“It was always very difficult to find somewhere because more and more spaces up the road had become residents’ parking,” she said, adding that when she went shopping she would have to ‘pull up, chuck it through the front door and go off to find a space’.
Abbeygate town and borough councillor Paul Farmer, who was first approached about problems with the residents’ parking in 2004, said this week he was ‘delighted’ that his long campaign had been successful.
County councillors Mark Ereira-Guyer and Stefan Oliver each donated £1,000 from their locality budgets to finance the scheme.
Ms O’Brien said: “I was very keen to get it, it’s been a long time coming but luckily we had Paul, and Mark and Stefan Oliver, who worked hard to get it for us – we’re so thrilled.”
