Pam Clarke had no hesitation turning out to help launch this year’s Cancer Research UK Relay For Life.

Pam, from Blo Norton, would probably not be here if it was not for Cancer Research. Five years ago she had a pioneering treatment for the rare cancer pseudomyxoma peritonei, which coats all the abdominal organs in a jelly.

“Only one in 900,000 people get it,” she said. “Why would you fund research for one in a million? Research has made a difference to detection and treatment of my condition. Fifteen years ago my prognosis would have been quite different.”

Now the operation involves cleaning out the jelly and filling the abdomen with a hot chemo ‘wash’.

After the operation Pam retrained as a teacher and now teaches at South Lee School.

She told the relay launch on Monday how the money raised had helped her.

Teams of eight to 15 people can take part in the relay at Ickworth Park on July 27-28 to raise more cash for research. To enter visit http://relaycancerresearchuk.org/bury-st-edmunds or call Lorraine Cockerton on 07515 759478
