TWO women are preparing to cycle from the Taj Mahal in Agra to the ‘Pink City’ of Jaipur for Women V Cancer – and have raised more than £12,000 already.

Fiona Crabtree, 53, and Kathy Stapleton, 56, both from Bildeston, have been cycling 50 miles at a time to get in shape for their 190 mile ride through India beginning on October 21.

Fiona, who owns Pressgang dry cleaners in Hadleigh, suffered from breast cancer two years ago.

She said the experience put her life into perspective and has spurred her on to take on the challenge.

Kathy’s husband, Michael, battled leukaemia 12 years ago and still needs tests every three months to make sure it stays in remission.

Fiona said she was termined to complete the ride.

She said: “To be honest, so many people have supported us that if we have to walk the distance, we will.

“Everyone in Bildeston has been so supportive of us, setting up events to raise money and making donations themselves. It is amazing how much money people have given us for the ride.

“We have raised more than £12,000 already but we are aiming to get £15,000 or more.

“We managed to raise £5,000 on August 31 thanks to the help of Jeff and Hazel Gadsden at Christmas Hall – they set up a Caribbean barbecue for us.

“It was incredible to raise so much money in just one night.”

Fiona, a Bury St Edmunds magistrate, said after her cancer ordeal she wanted to give something back to help other people in her situation.

She said: “I ended up having a lot of operations but I was lucky that my cancer didn’t travel. It certainly puts it all in perpective.

“Anything I can do to help the fight against cancer I will.

“I am just lucky because I survived my cancer and am able to do these things.”
