Out of control dog spared

A 59-YEAR-OLD woman’s dog was spared by a court after it attacked an elderly man – despite the introduction of new stricter guidelines days before.

At Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court on Friday, Eva Jones, from Saffron Close, Brandon, pleaded guilty to allowing her German shepherd, Cesar, to be dangerously out of control in a public place.

Kenneth Fadden, also of Saffron Close, was bitten on the thumb in the incident on July 7. He also had to fend off the dog with his walking stick.

The attack took place when Mr Fadden tried to coax the animal back into its house after it escaped through a patio door.

Magistrates decided not to implement new rules, brought in last Monday, which could see owners imprisoned or the pet put down.

Magistrate Susan Hughes instead gave Jones a one-year conditional discharge, ordered her to pay Mr Fadden £100 in compensation and the court £85 in costs.

A control order was also made ordering that all exterior doors are shut when the dog is in the house.
