Open day bursts into bloom
A VILLAGE was in full bloom over the bank holiday as it raised more than £14,000 at its open gardens weekend.
Around 2,000 visitors made their way to Walsham-le-Willows for the Open Gardens weekend, helping to raise more than £14,500 for the village church and other organisations.
John Stebbing, trustee of the Walsham-le-Willows Open Garden Trust, said the amount raised was ‘remarkable’ and thanked the 250 people who volunteered.
“It’s a fantastic effort and a pleasure to be involved. We have got people who stand all weekend serving teas, and schoolchildren who volunteer.
“It works out as about a quarter of the village helping out, it’s incredible.”
Since it was introduced 32 years ago, the event has raised more than £150,000 for village causes, according to Mr Stebbing.
Among the attractions was a garden donated by Ray Freeborn, who designed the plot with wife Joan while terminally ill.
Entry to the event cost £6, while the rest of the money was raised through selling refreshments.
