OLYMPIAN Mariette Rix visited Combs Middle School on Tuesday to share her experiences of London 2012.

Mariette, the South African hockey team’s goalkeeper, who plays for Ipswich Hockey Club, told the children about the spine-tingling moment she entered the Olympic stadium for the first time, the daily life of living in the Olympic village and showed pictures of all the fellow athletes she had met.

Mariette said: “I feel I have got so much from the sport, I feel I want to give something back.

“Seeing their reaction is very special. If just one child can be inspired to be healthy and to have a dream then it is worth it.

“I retired from international hockey soon after the Olympics – after London 2012 I didn’t think anything could beat it.”
