Olympic athletes and cartoon character among entries
1ST PLACE BY JOHN AND WENDY WAUGH WHEPSTEAD SCARECROW COMPETITION
FROM SpongeBob to Joseph’s amazing technicolor dreamcoat, this year’s Whepstead’s scarecrow competition had it all.
Last weekend, the village invited visitors to walk its scarecrow trail, where Olympic and Noah’s Ark-inspired creations could be spotted, as well as a variety of hard-working straw men including builders, a fisherman and a dog walker.
Di Howe, a member of the Whepstead community association committee, said: “It seems to be getting better year on year.
“The village really gets behind it and the people come up with some great ideas.”
This year’s 20 entries were judged by the Rev Robert Griffiths, rector of Whepstead, who also judged last year’s competition.

He said: ““It was quite hard to judge because every one was so different.”
He added: “I thought they were all very good. They were varied and I think people were really inventive.
“There were some very unusual ones – people had certainly thought hard about trying to be different.”
Refreshments were served in the village community centre and on Saturday visitors were also invited to browse Whepstead’s sale trail, with table top crafts and a car boot sale along the way.

All proceeds from the weekend will be put towards funds to provide and maintain the community centre for village activities.
“It’s good in terms of the community being involved in doing things together and it’s great that all the families can get involved,” said Mr Griffiths.
