A SERVICE marking the birthday of Florence Nightingale has been held at West Suffolk Hospital.

Florence Nightingale became famous for her work improving patient care and sanitary conditions.

During the service, the Rev Graham Rendle spoke about Florence Nightingale’s life from her shock at the filthy conditions in which wounded soldiers were treated during the Crimean War to her work convincing the authorities in Britain to improve sanitation in hospitals.

Mr Rendle said: “The development of nursing owes a great debt to Florence Nightingale. The improvements in medicene would amaze her today, but the basics of care for our patients remains at the core of nursing.”
