NHS launches 111 service

A new phone number for non-emergency medical advice has been launched by the NHS.

Patients can now dial 111 after the freephone number was launched at 8am on Tuesday by NHS Suffolk.

The number is available to every kind of non-emergency healthcare inquiry and is available 24 hours a day, all year round.

Dr Billy McKee, Suffolk’s NHS 111 lead, said: “NHS 111 is about making it easier to access local healthcare services. Simply by calling 111, patients will be directed to the most appropriate service that meets their needs.”

The service replaces out of hours numbers and the NHS Direct telephone service.
