New Thedwastre councillor

Liberal Democrat Penny Otton has been named as the new Suffolk county councillor for Thedwastre after yesterday's by-election.

The by-election had previously caused a row between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, who accused each other of misinformation.

Villagers in Beyton, Drinkstone and Thurston took to the polls after the resignation of Conservative councillor Sue Sida-Lockett.

Penny Otton, who won by just under 100 votes, said: "This result shows the concerns that the public have over a number of the Conservatives' policies at County Hall.

"I will do my best to fight for the rights of all the residents in the division and thank them for electing me.

"I would also like to thank my husband, who wouldn't have chosen to spend our wedding anniversary campaigning for my election today, as well as my fantastic team."
