New skate park hit by vandalism
THE group behind securing a £7,500 grant to build a community skatepark has expressed its dismay after the project was vandalised.
Work on Brandon Remembrance Playing Field (BRPF) Skate Park was interrupted at the end of May when vandals pulled apart safety fencing to gain access.
Margaret Young, treasurer for BRPF, said the contractor working on the £14,000 project had considered quitting over the incident.
“The project was in danger of being stopped because he was not willing to keep putting the safety fencing back up.
“I’m not sure the people who are doing this realise that this is something that is being built for the community to use,” she said.
Ms Young said that children who congregated near the skatepark site, off Church Road, had said they were happy to stay off the skatepark until it was complete.
But some of the ramps had been pulled up and used since then, according to Ms Young.
“We were horrified because small children were on the ramps with no safety barriers and could have been hurt.
“When we asked them to get off, the older ones just laughed at us and started shouting abuse,” she said.
Ms Young did emphasise that it was a ‘small minority’ of children who had been causing problems.
Funding for the project was recently received from the Awards for All Big Lottery Fund.
The £7,500 grant put the project’s funds up to more than £14,000.
Brandon Town Council, Brandon Rotary Club and county councillor Bill Bishop have also contributed to the scheme.
