New shop is flagship store

Shoppers are celebrating after Peacocks opened its new store in Stowmarket at the former Woolworths site.

Stowmarket Mayor Vera Waspe formally opened the branch yesterday, just nine months after the shop, in Ipswich Street, was left empty.

Rebecca Carter, manager of the new store, said several of the 20 new staff at Peacocks had previously worked for Woolworths before the firm went bust.

"We've got a really good team of staff here," she said. "We've had a really good response so far and it was a great honour to have the mayor here. It was a nice welcome for Peacocks."

Mid Suffolk District Councillor Lesley Mayes, portfolio holder for Stowmarket regeneration, said: "I can only say how delighted we are that Peacocks has come here.

"Our unemployment rate is the same as it was in July last year, and we feel very enthusiastic about Stowmarket's future."

The new branch, which will act as a flagship store for the region, will also run in-house courses for staff across East Anglia in a specially-designed training room.
