New police commissioner relinquishes cabinet role

Suffolk’s police and crime commissioner Tim Passmore has relinquished his cabinet post at Mid Suffolk District Council.

Cllr Passmore has stepped down as portfolio holder for the economy to focus on his new post.

Last week, he quit as the authority’s leader but he will remain as a Conservative councillor for the Helmingham and Coddenham ward.

Cllr Derrick Haley has stepped in as interim leader until a new leader is elected at the next full council meeting on December 20.

Cllr Passmore was elected as the county’s first police and crime commissioner earlier this month after beating Labour’s Jane Basham on second preference votes.

The new role replaces the police authority and he will have responsibility for the budget, setting local policing priorities and appointing the next chief constable.
