New faces join Bury police team
New faces are being welcomed to the Bury St Edmunds police team after a new year reshuffle in the unit's top roles.
Chief Insp Martin Barnes-Smith has been named the new district commander for St Edmundsbury, replacing Chief Insp Mike Bacon, who previously held the role.
Chief Insp Barnes-Smith moved to Suffolk from London in 1984 and has lived in the Bury area ever since.
He said: "I believe that everybody, whether they live, work or are just visiting the area, should be allowed to go about their day-to-day business without it being spoiled by the minority, intent on committing crime or anti-social behaviour."
A senior officer in the 2006 investigation into the death of Gemma Adams, one of Ipswich killer Steve Wright's victims, has also moved to Suffolk Police's Western Area.
Supt David Skevington has been made operations manager for the area, replacing Supt Jon Brighton.
In the serious and organised crime direc-torate, Supt Skevington investigated the murder of William O'Connor, in Bury, in 2007, and also led the investigation into the fatal shooting of BBC journalist Kate Peyton, from Beyton, in Somalia.
Supt Skevington said: "I am very focussed on ensuring local policing is of a high quality and that Safer Neighbourhood Teams are delivering a service that meets the needs of their communities."
