New cemetery gets thumbs up
A TOWN Council’s fears over a lack of space in its cemetery has been eased after planning permission was granted.
Brandon Town Councillors are concerned that its current cemetery at the Church of St Peter only has capacity for the next five years.
But on Wednesday, Forest Heath District Council agreed to continue planning permission for a new one and half hectare site to the north of Manor Road which would have burial capacity for the next 100 years.
Reg Silvester, chairman of the town council, told members at the meeting of the Development Control Committee that the town was ‘desperate’ for the space.
“There is no other space we can use in the curtilage of the town and there’s nowhere that offers the convenience that this site offers.
“I don’t think a town like Brandon should be without it’s own cemetery - please think about what we would do without this planning approval,” he said.
The application was recommended for refusal by planning officials after Suffolk County Council’s Archaeological service said works would cause ‘significant disturbance’ to an area of high importance.
Bill Bishop, Eddie Stewart and Tony Simmons, Forest Heath District Councillors for Brandon, suggested applying conditions so that archaeological surveys would be carried out as and when required.
The town council has been informed that a survey would cost in the region of £120,000, according to Cllr Silvester.
However, he added that the work could be carried out in stages when necessary.
A compulsory purchase offer to landowners, the de Lotbinieres, has been made.
