Network Rail unveils plans for railways across East

Network Rail is planning to spend £2.2 billion in the East as part of the biggest investment in rail since the Victorians.
The plans for 2014 to 2019 include remodelling Ely North Junction to remove a bottleneck on the West Anglia line, improving access to Thetford, and reinstating a double junction at Haughley Junction, near Bury St Edmunds, to speed freight between the West Midlands and Felixstowe. Network rail hopes that will draw freight off the A14 and A12.
There are proposals for five third party stations, though not for the Great Blakenham’s proposed SnOasis whose developers say they are still talking to the Department of Transport. A station there was part of the planning permission.
Signalling will be improved across the region with a new rail operating centre at Romford to cover Suffolk, Norfolk and surrounding counties.
A Greater Anglia spokeswoman said it had worked with MPs and others to get investment on the region’s infrastructure. She added: “This business plan reflects much of that work and is an excellent start in meeting the aspirations of the region for significant upgrades to train services and rail infrastructure.”
