Neighbourhood centre wins community award

People living on the Abbey estate, in Thetford, have every reason to be proud for the heart of their community has been recognised as among the best in an eastern region awards scheme.

Peddars Way Housing Association was named regional winner in the National Housing Federation East of England What We Are Proud Of awards.

This was for its Abbey Neighbourhood Community Centre on the Thetford estate.

The centre was set up by residents using a local community centre which had been unused for 12 years.

Friends of the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre with help from Peddars Way went to Breckland Council in a bid to resurrect the centre and, with Breckland funding and support from the Keystone Development Trust, the community grew its own hub. Now tenants and residents can share community events and enjoy being connected to their community.

David Seaton, managing director of Peddars Way, said: "The transformation of the Abbey Estate has gone from strength to strength and this has been achieved by tenants and residents taking pride in their community.

"Getting involved is the key message for what the centre has to offer.

"The whole community made this project the success it is today and their journey has been exceptional.

"They are immensely proud to have won the East of England award and we all look forward to going through to the national finals."

The eastern winner was announced after three finalists gave presentations at Bedford Lodge Hotel in Newmarket on Friday.
