Nature reserve robber locked up

A ROBBER who attacked a man with learning difficulties and stole his cash has been sent to a Young Offenders Institution.

Sam Delo, 20, of Ipswich Street, Bury St Edmunds, hit the man on the head before taking the money.

He was sentenced to three years’ custody when he appeared at Ipswich Crown Court on Friday.

Delo had pleaded guilty to an offence of robbery on February 7.

Prosecuting, Robert Sadd said Delo had gone with the victim, to whom he owed money, to a nature reserve on the outskirts of the town, in Oakes Road.

While there, Delo struck the man on the head with a wheel brace and stole a small quantity of cash.

The victim, who was taken to hospital, suffered a two centimetre cut to the top of his head.

Ian James, in mitigation, said Delo was trying to change his life but as a result no longer had the support of friends.

He had not gone with the man to Oakes Road with the intention of robbing him.

Sentencing him, Judge David Goodin told Delo: “I accept that you did not target him on that day but the circumstances were that you took full advantage of his shortcomings.”

Judge Goodin said that while there had been no significant premeditation, Delo had committed a violent offence before at the same location.

The 140 days which Delo has already served in custody will be deducted from his sentence.
