Fire crews tackled a fire in ducting at Muntons maltings in Stowmarket yesterday.

Six appliances attended the incident on Needham Way at around 3.20pm, to find smoke coming from the fourth floor ofa processing building.

Staff were evacuated from the building while crews tackled the fire which started in the factory’s hammer mill.

The fire was extinguished at around 5pm and no one was injured in the incident.

Dr Nigel Davis, Manufacturing and Technical Director said: “This is an exceptional incident and has only resulted in suspension of normal operations for around 2 hours.

“The malting plant continued to operate as normal.

“The fire is now extinguished but as yet the cause is not known.

“A total of 6 appliances attended although only one was operational in controlling the fire.

“Staff were allowed back into the building at 4.45pm when it was again declared safe after the fire brigade had made a thorough safety inspection of the affected and adjacent areas.

“At this time the safety of our employees is our biggest priority. We have evacuated the entire site to places of safety and the fire brigade are on site.

“There are no reported injuries.”

Suffolk Fire Service said: “The fire was located in ducting on the 1st and 2nd floor of the building. Ducting has been dismantled and to minimise water damage to the building, fire has been extinguished using CO2 fire extinguishers.”

The building was checked using thermal cameras to make sure the fire had not spread to mother areas.

Crews from Needham Market, Stowmarket, Elsmwell, Ixworth, Bury St Edmunds and Ipswich attended.
