Muggings in Bury St Edmunds by men armed with knives

AN area off Oakes Road in Bury St Edmunds remain cordoned off this morning after a gang believed to be armed with knives assaulted two men and stole a rucksack containg cash and other items.

It follows a similiar incident in Westley Road, Bury St Edmunds also last night.

The Westley Road incident happened between 9.45pm and 10pm. The 27-year-old victim was walking towards Queens Road when he was approached by two men in their mid-20s, who shouted at him.

One of the assailants pulled a boxcutter-style knife from his jeans. The victim was then pulled to the floor.

A HTC Wildfire mobile phone, wallet, cigarettes and lighter were all stolen from the victim.

The two attackers then ran off towards the Murco garage.

The first man is described as about 6ft, slim with fair hair. He was wearing red and white shorts, a baseball cap and a red and white bandana over his face.

The other man was around 5’9” tall and a little stockier than the other offender. He was wearing dark jogging bottoms and a dark hoody.

The second mugging happened at around 2.15am off Oakes Road. Four men wearing balaclavas approached two other men and demanded their cash and property.

Two of the gang were believed to be carrying knives.

A fight broke out and the victims were punched and kicked. Both men were treated by paramedics but were not seriously injuried.

A rucksack containing cash, bankcard, clothes and a phone charger were stolen.

Officers want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of either robbery, or who may have other relevant information.

Police are not treating the two crimes as linked at this stage.
