Suffolk’s highways department is looking at ways to stop car drivers ignoring a ban on them using a central Bury St Edmunds street.

St Andrew’s Street South, between the arc and the back of Boots, has access restricted to buses, taxis and trucks unloading. But one Bury Free Press reader counted six cars and a motorbike there in 10 minutes.

A spokeswoman for Suffolk County Council said: “The county council is aware of issues surrounding compliance to the vehicle restrictions on St Andrew’s Street South.

“We are currently investigating the situation further and considering options for improvement.”

PCSO Helen Morgan said: “There is clearly displayed signage at either end of the road.

“Officers from the Bury Central Safer Neighbourhood Team regularly holds days of action to clampdown on breaches of traffic restrictions in the town centre and this area is often a focus.

“Some drivers use the area as a cut-through or a place to pull over and use the shops. This can be an issue for the taxis, buses and lorries that have to use the street every day.”

She added: “Officers are urging people not to use the restricted street. Words of advice are given when drivers are stopped but a breach can also result in a Fixed Penalty Notice.”

Such words of advice are not enough for more than three drivers a week. Police figures show 75 FPN for ‘using a prohibited vehicle on a restricted road’ were issued in the street in the 22 weeks between April 1 and September 30. In addition, five were issued for breaching the ‘no waiting’ regulation and two for causing an obstruction.
