Mother jailed after shoplifting with children

A mother who took her two young children shoplifting has been jailed for 12 weeks.

Kerry Janet Edwards, 31, of Durham Way, Thetford was spotted shoplifting from two Thetford stores last month.

On Tuesday she pleaded guilty at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court to two offences of theft and one of possessing amphetamine and asked for another theft to be taken into consideration.

Tess Mann, prosecuting, said staff at Superdrug saw on CCTV that she had picked up three bottles of aftershave worth £39.99 which she put into her pushchair before leaving. The next day she went into Store Twenty One with her children aged three and four. She went into a changing room with her children and a number of items. She was found with £236.86 worth of goods in the car park and while in custody police found 0.53 grams of amphetamines.

At the time she was under a suspended sentence for theft.

Nick Jenaway, in mitigation, said Edwards had committed the thefts to sell on items to cover unpaid rent. The drug was old from five years ago.

District Judge, Celia Dawson, said: “These offences are particularly serious because you involved your children, they quite clearly knew what was going on and you used the push chair to disguise the items you took.”
