Moreton Hall pub shows support to employee battling breast cancer
Pink concert for breast cancer Moreton Hall pub. FL;
Anyone spotted not wearing pink at the Moreton Hall pub’s music concert last Thursday was asked to pay a charitable fine.
The idea was the brainchild of Sylvia Smith, 53, who works at the pub and lives above it.
In September, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and she has since undergone a mastectomy and begun a monthly course of chemotherapy.
Around £300 was raised at the pink event, which will go directly to West Suffolk Hospital’s breast cancer unit.
“I was gob-smacked, everyone was brilliant” said Miss Smith, grateful for the support of her colleagues and customers.
She added: “If you think back 20 or 30 years ago, cancer was a taboo subject. Now nine out of 10 people know someone who has had some kind of cancer. It’s not that I’m being brave but sometimes I think that if I sit in a corner and cry, I won’t get better.”
Pub landlady Georgina Barnes said: “People were overwhelmed by the occasion, the team, the regulars, even people just coming in were putting money in the bucket. People were taken in by it all and just wanted to do their bit. It was a really good night.”
