MORETON HALL: Mum to raise funds in memory of son
Liz Cummins raising money for CLIC Sargent in memory of her son Ben
A mother, whose son lost his battle with cancer at age four, is holding a charity fund-raiser on Moreton Hall to honour his 18th birthday, which would have taken place today.
Liz Cummins’ ‘always smiley’ son Ben was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer atjust two. He underwent chemotherapy and was in remission for 11 months before the disease, which ultimately killed him, returned.
Tomorrow, Miss Cummins, 43, of Horringer, will host a party at the Moreton Hall Community Centre, off Symonds Road, in aid of the ‘fantastic’ children’s cancer charity CLIC Sargent.
She said: “I’ve never done this before but Ben would have been 18 on Friday, and I know a lot of people who had children at the same time, so I felt that in memory of him I would hold a party to raise as much money as possible for the charity.”
Miss Cummins, a mobile hairdresser, said the charity, called Sargent at the time, helped her and her ex-husband pay their mortgage after they chose to look after Ben at home, rather than have him cared for in a hospice.
Tickets to the party, which will start at 7.30pm, are available from the community centre bar, on the door tomorrow, or by calling on 07814 242273.
Resident DJ Phil the Rhythm will be providing disco entertainment free of charge and a free buffet will be provided by Moreton Hall Caterers, again at no cost.
Miss Cummins is keen to hear from anyone who would like to donate a raffle prize. Two Ipswich Town football tickets are among items up for grabs.
Meanwhile, her partnerSylvia Hogg, 44, and friend Alison Baker, 43, are preparing to run the London Marathon, also in aid of CLIC Sargent.
Miss Hogg, who lives in Horringer, agreed to take part in the event during a ‘drunken night out’.
She said: “I hadn’t done any exercise of any form for 30 years before this. It’s fair to say, it’s totally out of character.”
Mrs Baker, of Moreton Hall, said: “It started as a joke but it has ended up being quite serious.
“We started training in September and we couldn’t run from the Moreton Hall club to John Banks (Honda) without stopping.
“We’re doing 14 miles now, 16 miles next week.”
