A woman whose Christmas cake stall has raised more than £30,000 for St Edmundsbury Cathedral has received the Order of St Edmund Medal.

The medal, given to people who have demonstarted exemplary and unusual service to the cathedral, was awarded to Miche Shaw, 79, from Bury St Edmunds, at a service on Sunday.

She is the first woman in the congregation to be awarded the medal.

Miche, who served as an RAF Nursing Officer for 25 years, sets up her stall every year selling a range of festive treats.

Miche said: “It isn’t just cakes we have on the stall, we have all sorts of jams, chutneys and treats – you name it, we make it.

“I retired from the RAF in 1988 and in 1989 I asked if I could have a stall – it has gone on since then.

“I feel honoured to receive this award, absolutely honoured. It was totally unexpected, I have the rest of the team to thank for supporting me – I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Speaking before the service, the Very Rev Frances Ward, Dean of Bury St Edmundsbury Cathedral, said: “The medal is called the Order of St Edmund and it is awarded to people who give outstanding service. Today we are giving it to Miche Shaw.

“She makes cakes and jam and all sorts of goodies – she is a culinary wonder woman.

“She has done this over 22 years and has probably earned the cathedral more than £30,000. Six or seven people have been awarded the medal but she is the first woman in the congregation to receive it.

“I have sampled her cakes myself and they are delightful.”
