Market’s history to be celebrated
THE 600th anniversary of the signing of the Mildenhall’s market charter will see the town transported back in time.
The royal charter was granted by King Henry IV in 1412, granting permission for a weekly market to be held in the town on a Friday.
The 600th anniversary of the event will be celebrated with a weekend of entertainment between October 26 and 28.
The highlight of the celebrations will be a pageant held at St Mary’s Church, Mildenhall, at 7.30pm, on October 26.
The pageant will follow the progress of the market from 1086, when the Domesday Book was compiled and the market was held in the church yard, through to present day.
The issuing of royal charters was aimed at reducing competition between the markets of neighbouring parishes, and the granting of Mildenhall’s was key to the town’s development and later prosperity.
On the Saturday, St Mary’s church will be set firmly in the medieval period hosting activities including pottery making, story telling and a fancy dress competition.
Mildenhall Museum will hold tours on Sunday October 21 and 28, which will take the journey of the market traders, highlighting the events that changed the shape of the market and the town.
The museum has also published a new edition of Simpson’s History of Mildenhall to mark the event.
To join a tour, meet at St Mary’s Church, North Porch, at 1.50pm, cost £2.
