Man with sword on CCTV
A man equipped himself with a Samurai Sword as a weapon after having a row with a friend, a court has heard.
On Tuesday, at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court, Richard Alan Campbell, 35, pleaded guilty to possessing a knife in a public place.
Wayne Ablett, prosecuting, said it was just before 7pm on December 21 when a CCTV operator in the St Andrew’s Street North area of the town called police to report a man he had seen walking towards the arc shopping centre with a knife.
Police stopped Campbell, of Queen’s Road, Bury, in Parkway and found the 2ft long sword tucked into his trousers, hidden by his jacket, said Mr Ablett.
He had been drinking with a friend at Wetherspoon, but left to retrieve the sword from home after things had ‘got a bit heated’, he added.
In mitigation, Nic Wray said: “He didn’t return to the place of the dispute. In fact, he thought better of it and turned around before he got there.”
The case was adjourned until January 29 to allow the Probation Service time to prepare a pre-sentence report with ‘all options open’. Campbell was released on bail with a condition not to be drunk in public.
