Man rips T-shirt in custody

A man with ‘drink problems’ got so angry in custody that he tore his T-shirt from his body, Bury St Edmunds Magistrates’ Court heard on Tuesday.

At around 2.10am on October 20, police saw a blue Volvo driving slowly and swerving along Canterbury Way, in Thetford.

The driver, Simon Budden, 33, of Glebe Close, Thetford, was arrested after refusing to be breathalysed.

“He became quite angry in custody and ripped his T-shirt from his body,” said David Bryant, prosecuting, adding that one sample obtained had read 169 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

In mitigation, Sally Dale said Budden had sought help for childhood trauma, his mother’s death and father’s alcoholism, which had caused his own alcohol problems.

Budden pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen, receiving 16 weeks custody suspended for 12 months, to include supervision and alcohol treatment, and a three year driving ban. He pleaded guilty to driving without insurance, receiving no separate penalty.
