Man had ‘reasonably sophisticated’ cannabis growing operation

A Lakenheath man has been warned to expect a suspended prison sentence.

Karl Jones, 26, appeared at Ipswich Crown Court after pleading guilty to production of the class B drug cannabis, today (28).

The court heard how police with a search warrant had gone to Jones’ home at Mutford Green in November.

Prosecutor Michael Crimp said officers found a ‘reasonably sophisticated’ growing operation at the property.

Hydroponic cultivation equipment, lighting and extractor fans had been set up.

Police seized 27 cannabis plants and found evidence that 11 others had recently been harvested, said Mr Crimp.

Jones was arrested and made full admissions about what he had been doing.

When interviewed, Jones told police he had a heavy cannabis habit and was growing the drug for his own use.

Jones said he had recently harvested the first crop from cannabis planted four months earlier. He said the growing equipment had been given to him by a friend.

Mr Crimp said there was no evidence that Jones had been supplying cannabis to anyone else.

A pre sentence report prepared by the Probation Service indicated that Jones wanted to address his long term cannabis use and had asked for help.

Judge Rupert Overbury adjourned sentencing until mid March to allow an assessment to be prepared for a planned drug rehabilitation order which will involve Jones undergoing regular drug testing.

Jones was warned by Judge Overbury that when he returns to court he is likely to receive a suspended prison sentence linked to a requirement to carry out unpaid community work.

Judge Overbury said Jones would continue to be granted bail until his next court appearance.
