Man battles back from depression
A Stowmarket man, who has spent years battling depression, is turning his life around thanks to the help of a local charity.
John, 44, began suffering from clinical depression almost a decade ago.
Living in a mobile home in an isolated area of Mid Suffolk, he began having frequent epileptic-type fits, which left him losing consciousness, biting his own tongue and hurting his back.
"I lost my driving licence because of the fits and I wasn't working," John said,
"I thought I was just meant to get on with it and that this was the way it would always be. You do feel ashamed about not being able to cope."
But in April this year, he was thrown a life-line after learning of a charity called Together Working for Wellbeing, which provides temporary accommodation for people with mental health problems.
Based in Verneuil Avenue, in Stowmarket, staff provide 24-hour support and help tenants develop the skills they need to lead an independent life in the community.
Since moving into one of the flats six weeks ago, John is already taking control of his life. He is attending regular workshops to learn computer skills and brush up on his English and maths.
His long-term goal is to train as a plumber at West Suffolk College, in Bury St Edmunds.
John said: "I didn't think it would ever be possible for me to do any of these things. I don't know where I would be now without the help and support I have had.
"This is a stepping stone to getting back into normal life again."
But the charity is currently desperate to raise funds to continue providing tenants with the opportunities other people take for granted.
Julie Revett, deputy project manager, said: "If tenants want to do something then money has to be raised. This could be going out for lunch or a day trip somewhere, which all helps to build up confidence and allow them to live independently. But it's proving to be really tough to raise money due to the current financial climate."
Staff are urging people to donate soft toys and gifts for a tombola stall they will be running at Stowmarket Carnival on July 11.
