Man arrested under mental health act after crash

A man has been arrested and detained under the Mental Health Act after a road traffic collision which left five people in hospital.

Police were called to the A11 on Saturday at around 2.25pm to reports of a two-vehicle collision near the Elveden crossroads.

A 29-year-old man from Coventry, who was driving a VW Golf, was arrested at the scene and taken into custody for aggravated vehicle taking.

He was later arrested for dangerous driving and attempted murder.

Today, police bailed and detained the man under the Mental Health Act.

He is due to return to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre on February 20.

The second vehicle involved in the collision, a Toyota Yaris, had five occupants, two adults and three children.

The male driver of the Toyota, who is in his 40s, was taken to West Suffolk Hospital and is described as being in a stable condition.

The female front seat passenger, also in her 40s, was taken to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital by air ambulance and is in a stable condition.

Two teenage girls were taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge and remain in a stable condition. A further teenage girl was taken to West Suffolk Hospital.

Witnesses to the incident are being asked to call Pc Danny Ormes at the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 101.
