Luke's memory lives on with planting of tree

A tree has been planted and plaque dedicated to the memory of Luke Southgate in a ceremony on the Howard Estate in Bury St Edmunds.

Luke, who was a senior aircraftman serving with 2 Squadron RAF Regiment based at RAF Honington, was killed in Afghanistan in February.

A former Howard middle and County Upper School pupil, Luke was just was 20 when he died.

Luke's family joined civic dignitaries for the tree and plaque dedication on Monday last week, the same day that the squadron was returning to RAF Honington.

The memorial forms part of a new garden and seating area on St Olave's Precinct.

The 110,000 project, which involved community groups on the estate, also saw resurfacing work on the car park and footpaths, and incorporates artwork prepared by pupils from Howard primary and middle school.

It was funded through a planning agreement from the nearby Asda development and by the precinct owner, Land Master Properties.

Cllr John Griffiths, leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, said: "I admire the way that the community has embraced this project. The thought and attention to detail they have brought has transformed the area and made it a desirable and enjoyable amenity. It has set a standard for others to aim for".
