JOINING a pub poker league at his local has won Neil Pitchford a trip to Las Vegas.

Neil entered the weekly pub poker tournament at the now closed Dolphin pub in Thetford, which was one of 1,000 pubs and clubs taking part in a national tournament run by Redtooth Poker with 133,000 registered players. Neil won through the regional finals to the grand final in Nottingham on Sunday. There, he was one of nine, out of 378, to win a place at the final at The Orleans Casino in Las Vegas.

If he walks off with the title of UK Pub Poker Champion he will win £5,000, which will come in handy because he is between jobs and his wife Carla gave birth to their third child, Rosie, on Monday.

Neil, who has never been to the USA, will get seven days there in May but is taking a friend because Carla does not want to leave the baby.

“I can’t quite believe that I’ve won this trip,” he admitted.

What attracted him to the game? “With me it’s getting a good read on people, using the mathematics of it, what the percentages are and what the odds are,” he said.
