Labour's Terry wins Saxon Ward by-election
Thetford has got a new town councillor in the form of 22-year-old community worker Terry Jermy.
Mr Jermy, the Labour candidate, received 357 votes in the by-election for the Saxon Ward held last Thursday.
Lib Dem Mike Brindle polled 312, Mark Ludford, Conservative, polled 242, and Terry Dean, Independant, received 147 votes.
Mr Jermy said: "I am greatly humbled by the support given to me by the people of the Saxon Ward. This has been a hard-fought campaign by all candidates and I believe that this is an endorsement of hard work and determination.
"I would like to thank most sincerely everybody who voted for myself and the other candidates at this election."
The seat was previously held by Conservative Gareth Pickering – son and brother of current town and district councillors Marion and Sam Chapman-Allen. Mr Pickering resigned from the town council due to work commitments.
Peter Smith, chairman of the South West Norfolk Labour Party, said: "Terry's success shows the importance of local connections.
"Terry was born and brought up in Saxon Ward and still lives there, as do his family. He is well known for his community work for Keystone Devel-opment Trust and for his business – Go Further.
"For someone who is still only 22 years old, he's achieved a lot."
