Knight in Subaru armour saves strangers stranded in the snow

Matt is in a band playing at a friend's wedding on Saturday night. On the way back he, his wife and a friend were in the car when it got stuck. An odd duty Met Police officer helped them and let them stay overnight than drove them home on Sunday.

MATT Carter cannot believe how lucky he and his wife were that a ‘knight in shining armour’ rescued them in the snow.

The couple and a friend, dressed for a wedding, looked like spending a freezing night in the car when it got stuck on a hill near Great Yeldham on Saturday night, but out of the snow came a saviour in a Subaru Impreza Turbo 4x4 sports saloon.

Matt, his wife Christine and her friend Ellie Darling were trying to get from a friend’s wedding at the White Hart in Great Yeldham to the couple’s home in Raedwald Drive, Moreton Hall, when their Ford Mondeo slithered to a halt.

Matt’s band Cupid’s Wish had been playing at the wedding and the rest of the band had to spend the night in their van with their equipment in the hotel car park, having been unable to leave.

Matt got about a mile from the hotel. He said: “We were stuck halfway up the hill. I’ve never been stuck as badly as that and I don’t know what would have happened if he hadn’t helped.

“But then this guy drives up in a 4x4 Subaru and stopped at the top of the hill, then took a shovel out of his boot.”

He got them to the top of the hill then suggested they follow him to his home for coffee, but once there he checked the weather on the internet and said they could either stay the night or battle on to the main road, which he did not advise.

Matt said: “We stayed at his house and, even better, the next morning the roads were still bad so he drove us to Bury and we picked the car up on Monday.

“If it had happened in a film people would just think ‘what a lame story’ but it was a classic knight in shining armour. For me, he’s led by example and that’s going to make me think differently about helping people.”

Their hero is a serving Metropolitan Police officer who said: “The reason I did it was they were going to spend the night in the car and you had three people who weren’t equipped for it. The man was in a suit and the girls wearing high heels. It’s human nature really – who else is going to do it.

“I took them home because it was still bad and he had a wedding the next day. You can’t let someone’s big day be spoilt. Imagine the band not turning up to someone’s wedding.”

Enjoyed the article, just have two amendments I want to clear up: 1) My wife is called Charlotte, not Christine. 2) The Met Police officer wasn't odd, he was off duty.
