Needham Market mayor Kay Oakes met her sporting hero David ‘Hayemaker’ Haye at his gym’s open day in London – and celebrated by getting a tattoo of his signature on her arm.

Cllr Oakes has followed the heavyweight boxer’s career since he was an amateur and jumped at the chance to meet him in January.

And after coming face to face with her idol at his gym in Vauxhall, and getting him to sign her forearm, she rushed back to Suffolk to get the boxer’s scrawl made permanent.

Kay said: “We waited for seven hours to meet him but it was absolutely worth it.

“I have been besotted with him for years.

“I decided the day before I wanted to mark the day and thought if I get him to sign my arm then I could get it tattooed as a permanent memento.

“That night I arranged the tattooist to open specially for me. It was about half nine at night when I got back, they opened the tattoo shop and got it done.”

Cllr Oakes and husband Matthew, both keen boxing fans, have followed the former WBA heavyweight champion’s progress through the ranks.

She said Haye, who took part in last year’s I’m A celebrity...Get Me Out of Here, was shocked when he found out what she had planned.

She said: “David was absolutely beside himself when he found out what I was planning – he was blown away by it.

“He is my sporting hero – he is drop dead gorgeous and is a genuinely nice person.

“I had seen him interviewed before but when you meet him he really has got time for everyone.

“My husband Matt and I follow boxing and have followed David through the amateurs and when he was a cruiser-weight.

“Matt is a big fan, too, so doesn’t mind at all.”

Kay and Matthew are planning to visit the ‘Hayemaker’ at his London gym again this year to show him the finished tattoo.
