Judicial review over Post Office closures

Lawyers acting on behalf of campaigners in Stowmarket and nearby villages are seeking a judicial review over the decision to close two post offices.

They hope to overturn Post Office Ltd's decision to close the Crown Street branch, in Stowmarket, and Old Newton Post Office.

Melvin Barnes, who led the campaign in Old Newton, said: "It is good news for us - there is no appeals procedure through the Post Office.

"In view of the effect this will have particularly on disabled and elderly people, we are pursuing this course of action because we feel that their human rights and equal opportunities legislation has probably been breached," he said.

MP for Stowmarket David Ruffley also welcomed the move.

"The whole post office consultation exercise was a sham and it is clear that Post Office Ltd paid scant regard to the views of the local communities before confirming the closures. I am delighted that these decisions will now be tested in court."
